Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark When you were young and would to the library you would look for books that would give you an entraining story but yet you can learn from. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is one of the many books that the schools and the parents want to ban and protest against. With each story ranging from 1-3 pages each, the book includes all types of violence that is graphic and detailed causing kids reading this book to have nightmares and not being able to sleep at night. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was published in 1981 by Alvin Schwartz but didn’t really become popular until the 90’s that’s when the parents and teachers picked up on stories included in the book. After coming out with 3 series in total, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the number one challenged book from 1990-1999 and was the 7th most challenged book from 2000-2009. If you take a quick look though the books you are sure to find a image that you will in someway find disturbing, the book is writing by Alvin Schwartz but this images are hand drawn by Stephan Gammell, The images in this book is one of the top complaints. This book is meant for elementary students who most likely have never seen a skull or a dead body before which are some examples of some of Gammell drawings. After seeing these types of images it could start to frighten the child and give him/her nightmares. In fact, there is evidence that nightmares peak during middle childhood and contribute substantially to kids ' anxieties. In one study, Dutch children aged 7-9 rated nightmares among their worst fears (Muris et al 2000). This is also the age that they begin to read and come to reality with world that could also contribute to this.
