School shootings directly impact survivors, as they have an “increased incidence of a range of negative mental health outcomes, among them post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression” (Lowe and Galea 1). The connection between school shooting survivors and increased rates of mental health disorders reveals the long-lasting consequences of school shootings on innocent children, teachers, and other faculty. These disorders can contribute to a decrease in the quality of life of the survivors, a decrease in their lifespans, and an increase in unemployment as survivors may undergo little to no motivation or an inability to function without flashbacks that leave them paralyzed. Without help, the victims remain trapped in their disorders, which prevents them from living full lives. An example of negative mental health consequences is apparent in ten-year-old Catilyne Gonzales, a survivor of the Uvalde shooting, who experiences mental health decline after hearing a shooter murder her best friends across the hall.
I am trying out for the University of Oklahoma cheerleading program with the goal of building upon my previous 12 years of cheerleading. I hope to join this program to better my skills as an athlete, and grow as a person. I have grown up as a sooner fan and would love the opportunity to cheer for OU in all aspects. A school shooting is a traumatic event that requires early and effective intervention. Children are vulnerable to psychological stress which can cause devastating effects without proper intervention. The goals of my intervention plan are to clarify the cause of the shooting, stabilize the situation as soon as possible, mobilize necessary resources, normalize of the situation, get the victims to safety and facilitate healing and access to help for those who need it. The first step will be an immediate action of mobilizing the necessary personnel and resources to aid in the intervention process.
The article The Role of Health and Mental Health Care Providers in Gun Violence Prevention written by Ariel A. Williamson and Nancy G. Guerra talks about health and mental care providers can educate families and students about gun safety and the sole purpose of preventing any involvement in rage shootings. The article analyzes development risk factors, as well as the community around them, that could lead youth to gun violence. First, the authors discussed how firearm injuries are higher in states where gun ownership is more prevalent and less restricted. They highlight how having firearms at home is not a direct cause of death but failing to safely secure a gun is a known risk for incidents like school shootings.
It is very difficult to respond rationally to a national tragedy. For the past two decades the United States has been confronting what appears to be an increasing epidemic school violence, with each additional instance inspiring an ever more rehearsed debate about gun control, mental health, and school security. In the article, “The Impact of Violence on Children,” Joy Osofsky elaborates that gun violence in communities are extremely detrimental in communities especially for children. Osofsky, a professor of public health in Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, uses masses of children psychology, scenarios and experiences to demonstrate the importance of gun control and to increase gun regulations. She focuses on children’s response to guns and violence, showing that the exposure of gun violence to children at their early ages not only increases their interest to use guns, but also the likelihood to use it to resolve conflicts or when a problem arises. As this continues, children can also experience stress, thus struggling to regulate their emotions and their experiences of the occurrence of many gun violence. These exposures will manifest in the child’s growth and he or she will end up being a more aggressive and violent individual later on.
Not only youth is affected by gun violence at home or in the streets but also by violence in school. The University of Michigan did a survey saying whether being in or out of school a large amount of high school seniors admitted to being threatened by a weapon. From 1992 to 1994 school related homicides and suicides doubled. Many student grow up being bullied. These students have a hard time during school.
According to the Honorable Maria L. Fudge, the African-American youth is affected by gun violence in a different way. In fact, she states: “Gun related homicide is the leading cause of death among African American men, ages 15-19; African Americans are six times more likely than whites to be victims of a homicide; and though African American youth only represent around 15 percent of the total youth population, they have comprised up to 45 percent of gun deaths.” She also adds that eighty percent of those who commit suicide are white
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
