Columbine was a very tragic event. The Colombine shooting was when two teens, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree in their high school. They killed and wounded lots of students, and one teacher. The attack on Columbine happened April 20, 1999, twenty three people were wounded during the attack (“We are Columbine” Fox News). Columbine is located at Littleton Colorado (“Columbine Shooting” History Channel).

Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
Evidence shows they were planning for a year to bomb the school in an attack similar to the Oklahoma City bombing (Columbine Shooting, 2018). "Harris was described as the callously brutal mastermind, while Klebold was a quivering depressive who journaled obsessively about love and attended the Columbine prom three days before opening fire" (Columbine Shooting, 2018). Police have been trained more thoroughly for school shooting now that they are happening more often. They are putting the police through real scenario situations of an active-shooter. After this school shooting occurred many schools promoted a zero-tolerance policy for disruptive behavior and threats of violence from students.
After the tragic and cold-hearted school killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 children and 6 adult staff members were fatally shot. The number of school shootings within the past few decades has risen dramatically, which is just not acceptable. How can anyone accept the thoughtless cruelty with these young precious lives being treated like they are replaceable?
Due to my passion to help stop gun violence, I decided to do project, on preparing an effective gun violence speech more specifically formulating a speech for President Barack Obama. In this month alone in the United States, we have had more than three counts of mass shooting and of October 21st 2015, there was also another mass shooting in the United States. With so many shooting and death totals, gun violence has because a novelty because everyone citizens, public and the media all have their versions or opinions to the current situation. With gun violence being widespread, there are numerous accesses to information’s regarding gun in general and due to numerous accesses to information’s, the interested party has accesses to either conduct or explore a research.
19 years ago, the Columbine School Shooting. 11 years ago, Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. 6 years ago, the Virginia Tech shooting. Just last year, the Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 and harmed hundreds other. Just last month, the Stoneman Douglas high school shooting, that killed 17 and emotionally and physically harmed dozens more.
These acts of violence make school a place of fear rather than a place of safety. When did school become a place to worry and feel unsafe? Not only that but this event is a vicious cycle and as of right now it is unable to be contained. The news stories on the media of these events may be aimed to show people how tragic they are, but the shooters take the news stories as inspirations and school shootings continue to be on the rise.
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
School shootings are a reoccurring problem in the United States. As of 2018, there have been over 18 school shootings in America (Cuddy). However, this is nothing new to us. Every year they are countless reports of school shootings ending in injury or death. It should be obvious that schools are the safest place for parents to send their children during the day, the sad truth is, it is not.
The events that happened at Columbine High School were tragic. The columbine shooting would go down as the worst school shooting in American history. Thirteen people dead, twenty-four more people injured, on the dreadful afternoon of Tuesday, April 20, 1999 (Cullen, 2010). Parents in the time period never thought that anything like the shooting that happened at Columbine
On October 1st, 2015 President Barack Obama released a speech regarding the devastating mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. President Obama’s main argument, in his speech, was that we as a nation have put so much money to prevent other disasters but have, for the most part, ignored the idea of proceeding with gun control laws to prevent situations like mass shootings. The President mentions how “it's fair to say that anybody who does this has a sickness in their minds, regardless of what they think their motivations may be. But we are not the only country on Earth that has people with mental illnesses or want to do harm to other people.
Since the Columbine High School shooting, school shootings have become a common occurrence. People have become so accustomed to seeing them on the news, so we hardly bat an eye at them anymore. For every instance of a school shooting we see, there are hundreds of lawmakers making public that their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Frankly, those thoughts and prayers are simply not enough anymore. The Parkland shooting is one of many school shootings, that have brought light to the subject of gun violence in schools, and it is clear, if it hasn’t been one already, that gun regulation needs to change.
Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one.
The sound of a gun shooting is probably the worst and most terrifying sound that people want to hear. However, nowadays people in the United States are attacking by this sound more often due to the lack of gun control. The function of the guns is very limited. They are meant to be used as weapons in military operations such as defending their own countries. As we all know citizens in U.S. have the right to possess guns that should be used as one of the self-defending tools.
