Summary: Chapter 2 Chapter two dives into the concept of learning. As mentioned in the previous chapter, learning is the study of changes in behavior produced by experience, so when studying learning it is vital to examine how events in the environment change an individual’s behavior. Many scientists consider learning to be a natural phenomenon, they make their case based on four assumptions. The first assumption being that natural phenomena’s do not just happen, but instead they are caused as the result of some other event. The second assumption is that causes precede effects.
This essay will discuss the role of ecological validity in psychological research, drawing on material from the DE100 textbook ‘Investigating Psychology’. It will begin by giving a description of what ecological validity is, and consider it in relation to different examples of research. The research used to discuss the role of ecological validity will be based around social learning and aggression, behaviourism, and memory. Firstly the study of Bandura et al. will be considered, his experiments on children copying violent behaviours using the Bobo doll experiment.

One methodological issue with the Bain et al refrigerator study is that type of experiment used. Having used a laboratory experiment, all variables were under strict control and this does not reflect the true nature of the situation the children were placed in. Children trapped inside a refrigerator would not escape by pressing a panel on the floor, thus the experiment has features which do not reflect an accurate representation of a real life situation (Bain et al, 1958).
The balance of an object mainly involves the dissemination of mass in the object. In a myriad of aspects, balancing yourself or an object can be extremely different especially when we all odds such as gravity is stacked against you. As an example, some teenagers find it hard to balance school, sports and a job. With so much stress and various loads of duties it becomes too heavy for them to handle, and without the right balancing techniques, they can certainly tip over and fall. The NOVA documentary “Naturally Obsessed: the making of a scientist” shows the lives of three post-graduate students at Columbia University and their experiments and struggles they faced in the lab and the impact their research had on their mental and social health. Before talking about some different ways of knowing and areas of knowledge, it is important to distinguish what is active experiment and passive observation, explain how does humankind produce knowledge, and indicate in what other ways can humankind produce knowledge. Active experiment is the process by which an individual analyses and studies focusing on a specific topic and drawing up to a certain conclusion depending on what he or she has discovered. Passive observation is not as productive as active experiment because it is only the act of observing something happening without actually analysing and studying it deeply. More simply, active experimentation is experiencing something physically, while passive observation is learning from what other people have discovered.
