For a novel to be great, it must possess characters that are also unique and great. But what makes a great character? There are many qualities and components that assemble a great character. One component is for the character to develop during the story. If they were fully developed, both the reader and the character wouldn't be able to learn anything over the course of the story. A great character should also be realistic & human. This creates a more relatable semblance of the character that the reader can associate himself/herself with. Readers can be able to relate to the characters and the situation that she is in. The final component that great character must possess is that she should have a significant opinion on things and be able to speak her mind. She can learn from others throughout the story. Scout is a prime example because through the duration of the plot, she is guided by the people around her. An example of this is during the roly poly scene, where Scout is admonished by Jem for almost killing a bug. Scout then adds “Why couldn't I mash him?” Jem replies with “Because they don't bother you (238). Scout learns to never ever hurt anything innocent and to let them be. Another example of Scout’s development is when Atticus confronts Scout about fighting against others. Atticus states “You just hold your head high and keep those fist down.” Scout learns to restraint herself even after others bad mouth her or the people close to her.
