Recommended: Native american literature

The book The Sea Runner by Ivan Doig was a very interesting read. It had a lot of interesting parts and northwest cultures and place that he describes are amazing. He describe landscape is such great detail that you can see it in your mind. It was a bit hard to read and figure out what going on in book. The more that I read I can see the historical theme of the northwest that we cover in class. There are three themes that I saw in this book that I want to talk about in this paper. The first of these them is relationship between Native American and European which can be seen between characters of the book and the natives that they encounter through their adventure. One great example is when the main character steals a canoe from the Kolosh Indians. This led the Kolosh Indian into chase them and main character were almost caught by Kolosh but they got away (Diog, 80-82). This example is an encounter between Native American and the European and not one of the good one. Another example of Native American and the European within the book was when they were talk through an interpreter and native and native ask about how many skull the tsar had to sleep on (Doig, 104). It shows the different in language and culture between Native and Europeans. Also on this part of the book it mentions Chinook Jargon. This show that the author knew what type of language would have been use to talk between the tribes and Europeans. It is mention in our text book Chinook Jargon was mix of different Native American languages to be used for trade but it was poorly suit for European need to explain certain thing like religion or land holding (Schwantes, 31). This line show that they these two tribe are very different which can be due to the fact they come from different area with different type of way to live on the coast. They do not live on the same coast. Kolosh were from Alaska while the tribe hunt the whale was from the northwest so they would have to deal with two different type of water condition. These tribes have different traditions and value due to the areas that they lives as they will have different traditions and value if one of them had live in the mountain.
