What? On Tuesday, October 27th, I volunteered at YWCA’s Secret Seconds Thrift Shop. The YWCA of Missoula is an organization that provides many services to women and their families in Missoula. Their mission, eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, is addressed through domestic and sexual violence programs, leadership programs, racial justice initiatives, and housing and rental assistance. The Secret Seconds Thrift Shop is a source of revenue for the YWCA, and one hundred percent of the proceeds go towards these programs that address their mission. I began the afternoon by dusting off the tops of the clothing racks at the front of the store. This seemed like an unimportant job, but the glass tops of the racks were extremely dusty. The next task I was assigned was to put out more Christmas items. I went upstairs with Melissa, one of the workers at Secret Seconds, and we picked up six boxes of Christmas items. I then placed these items on tables that were already crowded with all kinds of Christmas decorations, toys and trinkets. It might have just been me being sick, but the women that were working there did not seem talkative about anything. I tried to start a conversation with one of the women about how why she was working there, but all I could get out of her was that she had been working there for about a year and a half. I kind of expected this to happen because I assumed at least some of the women working in the thrift shop would come from or be a part of the YWCA. There is confidentiality involved in any organization that deals with domestic violence or at-risk women and children, so a reluctance to open up and talk about her involvement in the organization is
