Humans need self control. Steven pinker exclaims “Human nature is complex. Even if we do have inclinations toward violence, we also have inclination to empathy, to cooperation, to self-control.” Humans have a tendency to feel or act certain ways. When we are put in certain situations we bring out the worst and best of our propensity. We always have two sides, a violence side and a side of self control. The self control side makes us know what's right from wrong and makes us have a restraint to doing consequential actions. Self control is the angel on your shoulder holding you back from devilish actions when the violence side is the devil leading you toward those bad decisions. Lennie continuously gets himself into trouble which therefore gets him and George fired from a bunch of different jobs. Lennie gives George someone to care about and someone to think about because he has no one else. When lennie accidentally kills Curley's wife all the men are out for vengeance especially Curley. George uses the theme of friendship to handle this situation. Lennie runs to the brush where george meets him. George knew he had to kill him out of good intentions. George knows he has to kill him himself and make his last words uplifting and optimistic or else lennie will have to face the horde and die out of violence. George had inclinations of violence but only in spite of doing what's best for lennie. George says “No lennie. I aint mad. I never been mad, an’ i ain't now. Thats a thing i want you to know”(106).
