The name "Seminole" came about from the tribe's original name of yat'siminoli meaning "free people". That was the name the Seminoles had referred to themselves as because of their refusal to be conquered and converted by the "white man". The Seminole Tribe has long had a unique history with both the land of the Southeastern United States, and with the government of the United States. Their relationship with the land has been drastically altered as the result of three Seminole wars which displaced and relocated the Seminole tribe. As a result of the persecution by President Andrew Jackson, members from a variety of tribes in the Southeast United States began migrating into Spanish Florida to seek refuge.
Upon their arrival to the North American continent, the Jamestown settlers had to deal with the numerous problems of a newly settled and distant colony, and Powhatan influences, as well as the discovery of the events that would improve their developing society. Although England learned of America’s existence years before their Jamestown settlement was established, there did not exist any accurate map of the Virginian geography until after the settlement had already been established. As a consequence of this, many settlements started on the American coastline and developed from there, yet these settlements would still struggle to exist while the colonists became familiar with their new found surroundings. Being unfamiliar with the environment, the first settlers had a difficult time navigating, expanding the settlement, and farming sufficient crops.

Like many white planters, the Creeks persisted with federal claims on escaped slaves who sought refuge among the Seminoles. The African Americans, Abraham among them, fearing this, worked hard at convincing the Seminole Indians to oppose removal.

The state is strongly influenced by a mixture of 18th-century French, Spanish, Native American, Asian and African cultures. Native Americans first inhabited Louisiana in the early 16th-century. The reluctance of many African Americans to leave Florida or separate from the Seminoles was intensified by their importance as food suppliers to the Indians, and they also had a special attachment to the land they cleared, tilled, and planted crops in Florida for decades that more rights and privileges under Spanish and British rule gave them. Consequently Seminole Indian unwillingness to return to Creek authority control in Oklahoma, from whom they had continuously separated for many decades, were important considerations to resist removal for both African Americans and Seminoles.

The Seminole Wars, also known as the Florida Wars, are important events in American History that are almost always ignored or overlooked. They consisted of three individual series of conflicts revolving around the Seminole Indians of Florida and the United States.
1. Paleo-Indians Paleo-Indians are described as the initial Americans, those who set forth the preliminaries of Native American culture. They trekked in bands of around fifteen to fifty individuals, around definite hunting terrains, establishing traditional gender roles of hunter-gatherers. It is agreed that such Paleo-Indians began inhabiting America after the final Ice Age, and that by 1300 B.C.E. human communities had expanded to the point of residing in multiple parts of North America. As these early Native Americans spread out, their sites ranged anywhere from northern Canada to Monte Verde, Chile.
