Introduction
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is an approach that is used to create an architecture based upon the use of services. SOA is used to provide services that can be used over and over again. Some of the services that are provided using SOA are, validating customers, producing data, and providing analytical services.
SOA reduces TCO
There are many ways that SOA helps to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). One way that SOA reduces the TOC is by reducing or removing the need for licensing. Licensing is something that costs a lot for businesses as it is constantly needs to be renewed or updated. Whenever companies purchase a product such as Microsoft Office they are required to also purchase licenses, which can get expensive depending on the size of a company. However, they could use an SOA service as Open Office, which provides a service similar to word but without the needs of licensing. Another way that SOA helps reduce TCO is that is allows companies to automate jobs that used to be manual. For example, in a law firm a process that used to be tedious

This is different then loosely coupled systems because in the event that one of the systems fail, then all of the other systems will need to be shut off in order to fix the problem at hand. Software that is tightly coupled will only work on one type of system and will depend on other systems in order for it to work. Operating systems such as Windows 7 would be considered tightly coupled because it relies on software drivers in order to install successfully. Tightly coupled systems work better when it comes to OS or software that needs to be installed because it has a specific set of
