D.A.R. Project The Seven Years War (1756-63) finished the drawn out rivalry between France and Britain over control of North America. Succeeding in the war resulted with the British being in incredible debt. Seeing that the American colonists had the most gain from the war, the British felt that the Americans should be responsible for some of the war’s cost. Another result of the war was Britain putting boundaries on imports and exports. The Sugar Act of 1764 enforced taxes on sugar and other goods shortly thereafter. The Stamp Act put a tax directly on the American colonist, and directly put a tax on printed items such as wills, deeds, newspapers, pamphlets, and even playing cards. Meanwhile, in Boston there were various acts of rebellion occurring. The Sons of Liberty were also around Boston at this time intimidating all of the stamp distributors. One of the stamp distributors by the name of Andrew Oliver actually gave up his job due to all of the intimation. Come the beginning of 1766 most of the stamp distributors had resigned their jobs. My family and I were American citizens and we were very proud of it. We loved and valued our independence, but it wasn’t always that way. When my brother and I were young I always remembered hearing my parents complaining about the taxes and rules that the British would enforce. Yes, I was young (only 11 years old) but it was very disturbing and I remember exactly how it made me feel. Mom and dad always seemed to be worried and that frightened me, but I was still very curious. I didn’t exactly know what the issue was right away so later I asked my mom what was going on. She told me that the British were enforcing this “thing” called a Stamp Act. I had no Idea what was going on, but luckily for me she told me everything! My mom told me that there had been a very long war called the Seven Years War where the United States encountered a huge amount of debt. When this happened the United States didn’t really have the money to pay off the debt. Since the war benefited the Americans the British thought the Americans should be responsible for paying off some of the debt. I was young so I was kind of confused, but I was also old enough to know that what the British were doing was not right. I’m glad I was interested enough to ask my mom what was going on because a lot of my friends did not have a clue. Everything seemed to make sense after my mom told me about what was happening.
