Since symbolism takes place as an object represented multiple times as a figure with symbolic meaning, then the cherry bomb takes place as a form of symbolism. The cherry bomb characterizes itself as a memory of Eddy because Clair describes how the cherry bomb reminds her of Eddy because “After Eddy’s accident, he gave me a cherry bomb. His last. I kept it in my cigar box as a sort of memento of good times.” The cherry bomb demonstrates this symbolic meaning because Clair tagged the cherry bomb with her memories of “good times” with Eddy.
Rock’n'Roll changed the way of thinking of the young people, and with this came the new concept of “teenagers”, who were considered for the elders as ‘rebels’ and ‘juvenile delinquency’ after they adopted the music and manners of the Rock N Roll culture, inspired by Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, The Comets and Johnny O’Keefe (the first Rock'n'roll Australian star in 1957) among others, who lead the new teenagers for dancing and enjoying as Americans. Rock’n'roll culture influenced not just the teenagers but also the radio announcers who used American accents to captivate the young audience. Unlike their parents, this new generation was interested in fashion, television, cinema, music and hairstyles, which meant that they were the new objective group for marketing. Through the movies, young Australians were influenced by movie stars like James Dean, which they wanted to imitate in his hairstyle, acting and dressing.
Tierney states, “Nostalgia has been shown to counteract loneliness, boredom and anxiety” (Tierney). Tierney believes that Nostalgia makes life more meaningful and also makes us a bit more human. Although Nostalgia has a lot of positives, some memories can be depressing. We need to learn how to control those depressing memories and not let them affect us in a negative way. Tierney’s article is very affective and he covers almost every aspect of nostalgia and the positives and negatives it has on
Two of the biggest groups to separate themselves from the other bands of the 1960s were the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Each had their own style of rock ’n’ roll and their own way of creating new music. The Beatles had a very British pop style at the start, which morphed into their unique style of music as they blended and mixed it with different kinds of “world music.” The band worked together to write and develop their style, which was different from the Beach Boys “whose creative center was unquestionably one member of the group” (Starr & Waterman, 305) Brian Wilson. Through Wilson, the Beach Boys developed a surfin’ style of rock ’n’ roll and like the Beatles, Wilson liked to experiment with different instruments and effects to change their sound.
While the Beetles and The Beach Boys focused on portraying the relaxing beach days in the sun or a little yellow submarine, in order to relate to American society. In the 1960’s, Simon and Garfunkel focus on what can be felt, leaning further towards the deeper, realistic days in life. While they may have had, to some extent, a dreary feel to their songs; they also contained modernized elements of music. Thier alterations to their music genre is what contributed to their musics ascending popularity. Their voices harmonized, an art than has taken numerous years to accomplish.
For example, Hey Jude has “...a generally encouraging message, and it was specifically inspired as an empathetic message to Lennon’s son during a tough time for him.” ( Abbey Road Cam, http://beatlesarama.com/what-is-hey-jude-about-the-sweet-meaning-behind-the-beatles-uplifting-ballad/) Secondly, according to an unknown writer, “'Yellow Submarine' is very simple but very different. It's a fun song, a children's song. Originally we intended it to be 'Sparky' a children's record. But now it's the idea of a yellow submarine where all the kids went to have fun.
Music is found to often tell a story or sooth you. It’s meant to connect with you in ways only you can relate to. In Mø’s song “Pilgrim”, she is singing about getting away from society and to go somewhere quiet, where you can hear your own thoughts and try to discover some greater truths about life. Throughout the song Mø sings “let go and get a hold of it”, but what she means is letting go in terms of getting rid of the bad stuff in your life that has caused you stress and getting a hold of the good things that make you happy and enjoy life. In Pilgrim by Mø, the theme desire to escape is conveyed through the use of atypical words and poetic elements such as repetition metaphor/simile and imagery.
“branded by music journalists and critics alike as a critical resurgence of British... or more specifically., ' English ', popular music that rekindled the spirit of the mid-1960s 'British ' invasion of the US by groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who and the small faces. Indeed, a number of these groups, notably the Beatles, the Kinks and the Small faces were frequently cited as key influences by leading Britpop artists such as Blur and Oasis.” (Bennett & Stratton, 2010) Characteristics of the British invasion influenced ‘Britpop’, a subgenre of rock and pop music that originated in the United Kingdom emerged from the British independent music scene of the early 1990s that created a period of increased pride in the culture of the United Kingdom throughout most of the 1990s nicknamed ‘Cool Britannia’ For instance, the Union Jack once again became a prominent symbol of the movement for fashion, props and for other uses to brand the British origins of these artists. Noel Gallagher of the indie band Oasis would be commonly seen playing a Union Jack painted Epiphone Sheraton for live performances.
An important aspect of both music and communication is making your thoughts relatable. Making something relatable will allow your audience to connect and care about it more knowing that they have felt similar things. Everyone has regrets and think about the past, lost loves, and reminisce about the good ole days of our past. Nostalgia is a powerful tool utilized by artist typically to provide listeners with memories and allow them to empathize with the work. This song makes me reflect on a time where I once made a mistake with someone I was romantically interested.
Although placelessness is a problem, it does not have a solution because it is not very tangible considering the issue is unique to each individual and because our economic systems are too complex to aid the problem. It entirely possible to feel “placeless” in a very uniquely cultured area such as suburban England (mentioned in the article ‘Floating in America, or The Perils of Placelessness’ by Christie Rodgers) even if it has a strong sense of place, because placelessness is subjective; I could feel connected in a location where you do not, or you could see culture where I could not. Furthermore, in the modern era, with the internet, people can synthesize and connect with the communities in which they are most comfortable in, and therefore
Punk rock is either one of the best or worst movements in society depending on how you look at it. Rebellion itself can be very scary to a country or very liberating for its people. It takes sacrifices from groups of people who are looking to make things better. A perfect example is the Civil Right protests that took place in the early 60’s. The cultural influence that punk carried still has values that can be observed today.
The stylistic choices used by speakers and songwriters help give the song/poem depth, purpose and add emotion. David Bowie uses stylistic choices in the song “Five Years” to add meaning to the song and add to the overall structure by telling a story of earth dying and reactions of people after hearing the tragic news. He uses mood, tone, imagery, and rhyme scheme to convey a story to entertain, create emotion, and evoke questions within the listener. In “Five Years”, by David Bowie, he uses Imagery to add to the overall structure and add meaning to the song.
Sharon Olds is a contemporary poet and is known for writing intensely personal, emotional and political poems. “Sex Without Love” is an erotic poem that captures the beauty of having meaningless sex without love or pleasure. Sharon Olds shows the reader that the sex described in the poem is a cold and lonely act by effectively using imagery and theme, but she also puts an emotional and personal feeling in the poem. In the beginning of the poem, the imagery created seemed like the poet was not criticizing having sex without love, but rather supporting it.
In the novel Brave New World, author Aldous Huxley links sexual promiscuity and happiness by utilizing diction and imagery, proving that the only link sexual promiscuity has towards happiness is that it promotes a false sense of happiness. In the “New World Society”, where the main characters Lenina and Bernard Marx are from, everything is controlled and created to fit the social ecosystem of their “perfect” society. Even the people are created, from vials. Not born or produced.
While the atemporal postmodern version of nostalgia, free from wistfulness, is just a celebration of images, styles, behaviours, dreams and ultimately objects of the past. Meaning the post-modern nostalgia is actually a pre-defined experience exploited through the media and objects and is not solely a subjective fantasy. When this wistfulness and emotional longing from the modern nostalgia and the origins in the romanticism era is lost, the postmodern experience of nostalgia can become very flat but productive in processing emotions and memory. One is no longer trying to recover the irrecoverable, we become one with the attainable nostalgic object, which was never lost. This availability of the past makes it atemporal, free from the limits of time.
