Theresa Flores’s “The Slave Across the Street,” is a personal anecdote whose main purpose is to make Americans aware of the reality of human trafficking being in the U.S. and in our neighborhoods. The book shows how even in seemingly good life situations, traffickers are able to pick out and victimize those that are vulnerable. This does not only happen in third world countries, or in inner city, low income housing. Human trafficking is apparent throughout the U.S., in all levels of socio-economic classes. By Flores telling her story, she achieves the purpose in showing a different side of human trafficking that most people do not realize it has.
With this being said, it is clear that women and young girls are typically the most at risk when it comes to commercial sexual exploitation. In this category of trafficking, traffickers act as “pimps” and sell these women like prostitutes. These victims are made to perform sexual favors to make their captor or captors a profit. Development of an area can easily affect the society of that area. The landscape influences a society. Things like airports, roads, economic status can also change society. Atlanta has been largely impacted by its airport and its economic status. Atlanta has one of the largest sex trafficking cities, and child sex trafficking is a large problem in Atlanta.

Panic, sadness, and desperation make us all vulnerable and easy to be tricked, for these emotions cloud any rational thought, like a drug, gradually overpowering the person. As stated by the Soroptomist foundation, victims are often “lured with offers of legitimate and legal work as shop assistants or waitresses. Others are promised marriage, educational opportunities and a better life.” Others are sold as objects, by family members, including their own parents. Another reason is that these people associate themselves and befriends people involved in the sex trafficking industry.
Atlanta sex trafficking is also changed because of the location socioeconomic standards. Child sex trafficking in Atlanta is one of the highest in the United States. “Atlanta was named by the FBI as one of 14 US cities with the highest rate of children used in prostitution (Covent House,2017).” This is high because of the change in environment that the airport did to the city. Another article states, “"In Georgia, we know there 's a range from 200-300 girls that are trafficked each month in our city.
The hundreds of young girls that are sold every night, people's sisters and daughters, deserve more out of their lives. Over 71% of trafficked children show suicidal tendencies. This kind abuse leaves the women and young girls scarred for life. And, research shows that the problem centers itself in Atlanta, with 65% of sales in and around suburban and metro Atlanta area, 9% near the airport.
Sex Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. It is one of the biggest lies in society (Farley et., 2014). The Vanderbilt Law Review indicates that the majority of prostitutes do not enter the prostitution lifestyle on their own free will choice, but instead becomes a prostitute due to a variety of vulnerabilities that both pimps and traffickers exploit. This explains why young women get blindsided and think they are becoming a prostitute when in reality they are a sex trafficking victim (Elrod 2015). When the United States made prostitution illegal, it did not change the mentality of the johns.

Young girls or boys will meet people through social media pretending to be another teen but instead is an adult trying to use them for money. It doesn't necessarily have to be a crime but instead being immature and an a coward, not living up to who they really are because of other’s opinions. Teens social life nowadays are through social media networks.
Selling yourself for profit might possibly be the only way for some people to survive or to provide for their family. It maybe an easier choice to believe that it is an empowering decision they have made than to face the blunt and harsh reality of child sexual, physical, and mental abuse, done by the pimps that prey on the young women and men alike. The second reason people can be involved in sex trafficking is because they were either lured or kidnapped and don 't have any kind choice or say in what they
Majority of victims globally are girls and women, most of them are trafficked for the end goal of sexual exploitation. Traffickers mainly target females because they are excessively influenced by discrimination and poverty, elements that obstruct their approach to educational, employment opportunities and other resources. Maybe the most grounded factor is an urgent economic circumstance, which affects the accessibility of satisfactory employment in numerous nations for females more seriously than males. There is a suspicion that males are the perpetrators and females are the victims.
Human trafficking can affect any person, anywhere at any time, yet leaves multiple groups at higher risk for human trafficking. Runaway/homeless youth, LGBT members, migrant workers, undocumented immigrants, racial/ethnic minorities, those who struggle with substance abuse, and others all tend to be at higher risk for becoming victims of human trafficking. In order for human trafficking to be classified as a crime it must fit the three elements of human trafficking. These three elements fall under Act, Means, and Purpose. Act explains what is happening, in this stage people are recruited, taken, possibly moved to another location, and received by other traffickers or those who wish to exploit them.
