Human Sexuality has changed in many ways over the past few years. Some of the major issues in today's society involve sexually transmitted infections, communication, and rape. This list of issues could go on forever as the world and how we look at things are constantly changing.
Rape is defined by Dictionary.com as "unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim." If you look at the definition from each state it is a little different. As a women one in four women will be a victim of sexual assult within her lifetime (Dickson). The cost of care in the health care system can be as much as $16 billion annually with roughly 20 million people in the United States that contract a sexually transmitted disease a year; most of the which are between the age of 15-14 years old (HealthyPeople2020). The symptoms can be not there to very sever. Many of the symptoms that come with an STI are mild and are commonly mistaken for in women as a urinary tract infection or a yeast infection. The most common sexually transmitted infection is known as the human papillomavirus (HealthyPeople2020). The human papillomavirus has a vaccine that you get recommended around the ages of 11 and 12. If you do not receive the vaccine you are able to get a catch-up vaccine till the age of 26 for females and 21 for males. STI's are on the rise in the young population, one in two that are sexually active will get an STI by the time they are 25 (Rodriguez, 2017). As a society we learned that sex is not a good topic for conversation. Most of the words that we use are used in anger such as "fuck" and "screwing". When talking to your partner you need to be a good listener and not just the one who talks. Although it is not just listening but you need to make sure that who you are listening to knows that you are engaged with what they are saying. You can show you are listening by the body language, nodding your head and making eye contact and not looking at your phone or electronic device. Once they are done talking you should provide feedback so you can show that you were actually listening. Nonverbal communication such as facial expressions and touching is important as it can send a different meaning that is more intimate. Text messaging is the most common way that people today communicate (Self-Help). While texting is more convienent it can come across rude and can lead to misunderstandings which will cause tension in the relationship (Writer, 2011).
