I. Attention Grabber: Safety and shelter. These are two very basic needs that many of us take for granted. But sadly these two needs are denied to many women and children within our community.
II. Thesis: Domestic violence twists the lives of many women and children within our community, but through donations to The Shade Tree, we can help these victims and survivors gain control over their own lives and feel safe again.
III. Preview Statement: Today I am going to discuss the prevalence and reality of domestic violence against single women and mothers in our society, how The Shade Tree helps scared victims become strong survivors, and what we can do in order to help these women and their children during their first steps to freedom.

Around half of all domestic violence victims turn to services such as those provided by The Shade Tree. The end goal is to help these women build a support system through the advocates or the other women there themselves (Goodman, 2016). B: A key program The Shade Tree provides for domestic violence victims in the Courage for Change program which includes therapy and support groups.
1. Advocates in a study agreed that some of the main things women need when they first come into the shelter are support, safety, and self compassion. After doing a pre and post test of women in shelters and support groups, they found that women had higher scores for all of these catagories (Allen, 2017).
2. Shelters like The Shade Tree are necessary for abused women to have a safe, compassionate place to move to in order to escape the violence and have an improved life. C: The Shade Tree depends on donations from people like you and me. I'm not going to ask you to donate money. I know thats not possible for every person. But we can still help by donating items that women and children need when going to the shelter. This includes clothes, food, hygiene products, and more. A simple box or bag of old clothes you haven't worn in months can help a person in need. To donate, all you have to do is drop off your donations at the shelter on Main Street and Owens.
