There are many ways for a director to use film techniques to express an idea to an audience, and one such idea that was expressed to the audience of the visual text “What's Eating Gilbert Grape” directed by Lasse Hallstrom, was that of entrapment. This was achieved in the mommas death scene, by using: props, camera shots, lighting and music, to help the audience understand the idea of entrapment and how it relates to momma with how she is trying to break free of this idea. Props was one technique used by the director to help the audience understand the idea of entrapment. This was done by using a couch, a prop commonly occupied in the Grape family home by momma, an obese widow, to hint at the fact that for many years the couch acted as a sanctuary for momma where she had everything thing done for her as she stayed put. This is like a family of birds where baby birds sit tight in a nest and have everything done for them, except in this case
In Kiss and Tell, Alain de Botton humorously describes a situation between tactless and socially oblivious parents and their uncomfortable adult daughter, Isabel, who is on a date with her new boyfriend. Using immaturity and a lack of etiquette in the actions of the characters, multiple examples of irony, and the anticipation of Isabel’s father’s actions which all ultimately lead to a comedic effect, de Botton produces a universal experience that brings humor to the audience while commenting on family dynamics. To depict the immaturity and lack of etiquette in the actions of the characters, de Botton uses juxtaposition in the setting, onomatopoeia, and other literary devices. De Botton intentionally sets his story in a theater with an “elegantly

My observation took place at The lost dog cafe and my focus was mainly on the host welcoming customers. I started my observation at 6 pm and it took me two hours to complete my assessment. I was sitting at an high top chair right at the front of the restaurant which limited my eyesight to the back part of the restaurant. I decided to sit up front since I assumed the host would be standing at the front of the restaurant but soon I found out that she occasionally went to the back part on the restaurant to guide customers or walk the host down to their table when the restaurant is really busy which caused me to not have full view and leading to my observation being limited to the front half of The Lost Dog Cafe. If the assignment had allowed, I could've
