The religious revival of the 1800s was a perfect storm that allowed birth and growth of many new religions. One of the religions to emerge was Shakers. There was three main causes that allowed Shakers to be to establish and grow like they did, disestablishment of church and state, mass westward migration, and the desire for communal living and equality. With the disestablishment of church and state is now now legal to form a new religions and all religions had to compete on the same terms, no longer suppressing new religions from forming. The religious market place reached a new all time highs, full of people that were religious, but were looking for a religion to follow. New religions were being formed in hopes to absorb the abundance of people looking for a religion. Some of the religious groups that were provoked for the large religious market place emerged as a utopian societies. One of these successful groups was the utopian societies was know as the Shakers. The religious movement of Shakers started in Europe with Mother Ann Lee in 1774. She expressed that she had visions from God, these visions showed her that sex was the root of all evil. Immediacy after her visions she moved to America to escape the europeans religious persecution and this is where her religion truly spread. Originally shakers had became an off branch of Quakers, once Quakers had broke away from fanatic spiral expression the off branch was formed. They were called Shaking Quakers. Pleasant Hill had been affected by a decade of economic down turn and reduced recruitment rates. This economic down turn and reduced recruitment rates was dramatical amplified by the Civil War. The people of Pleasant Hill community were all pacifists so they did not have to participate in the war. The government still texted them heavily and took some of there recourses like there cattle. This only amplified the poor economic down turn. On top of this the large amount of death in the war make it harder for them to fins new recruits. With the Shakers being celibate the only way they were able to increase there population it had to be from the outside world. On top of the war killing off a lot of potential recruits the US government for the first time created a fully funded orphanage. Now with this orphanage in place all orphans did not end up in Shaker communities. Another way there recruiting was dramatically reduced. The last factor the cemented the fate of the Pleasant Hill community was the outside production experience technological advances that made there products a lot cheeper to produce and the Pleasant Hill community did not have the resources to advance to these new production ways. This lead to a dramatic profit cut on there sold products. The compounding affects of poor recruitment and economy lead to the Pleasant Hill Kentucky
