Should shark fin soup be banned? Although, people in favor of consuming shark fin soup argue that shark fin soup should not be banned in many reasons, but there are a range of results to the high consumption of shark fins. Therefore, eliminating a monumental of sharks can play a significant part in the equilibrium between predators and preys in marine food chain. Not only does it lead to losses in biodiversity and ecosystem, but it also causes loss in tourism industry. More importantly, this lavish menu is negatively related to human health. It is obvious that a ban on consuming shark fins is likely to maintain ecosystem and improve the quality of life. To begin with, the depletion of shark species brings about ecological imbalance. Conversely, there are high level of dangerous toxics such as methyl mercury found in this prized cuisine (Wild Aid 2015). In fact, methyl mercury known as a perilous neurotoxin is associated with the risk of neurological aliments such as Alzheimer’s and degenerative brain disease (Wild Aid 2015). What’s more, studies found that shark fins contain many hazardous impurities, for example hydrogen peroxide arsenic which are harmful to human health (Wild Aid 2015).The reason why there are high level of toxins in sharks is because hazardously chemical substances or heavy metals in contaminated water can be absorb in their bodies much greater than in small predators in food webs (Wild Aid 2015).
