She Kills Monsters is a very riveting and heart-breaking story about a high-school girl named Agnes who goes beyond her pedestrian customs in order to get a sense of her late sister, Tilly’s, troubled dual-lifestyle. Agnes meets a young “geek” named Chuck, who shows her a diary of her one of several of her sister’s lifetime stories portrayed in a mystical game of Dungeons and Dragons. Throughout the play, the audience sees how Agnes makes a special bond with Tilly in death that she never the chance to before when Tilly had been alive. I thought that the play was very compelling overall with a spin on a new and unorthodox storyline which really affects the 21st century human being’s outlook on societal norms. First of all, I felt that the actors had been extremely dedicated to their roles while performing. All the actors fit their theatre personas very well, and all of them were able to express their characters’ emotions as if they were experiencing them in real life. The costumes, transition slides and other props really set the mythological world of “Dungeons and Dragons” and allowed the actors to play their characters/creatures in the mythical world accurately. Next, the plot felt somewhat confusing at times; however, I believed that Tilly’s D&D life had a direct correlation to her real life (except with several exaggerations.) However, the dialogue made up for the flaws in the plot transitioning. Somewhat witty and edgy, the dialogue felt best suited for a high-schooler’s environment. The homophobic language being used by the cheerleaders deeply affected me and my perception of typical “gay” person. Finally, the theme of “being yourself” really tied in the entire storyline and almost made me shed a tear during the climax where Agnes accepts the way Tilly is. Without such a powerful theme which I feel is prominent during the 21st century, I would not have been deeply impacted.
