Soon, he gets a hermit crab. One day he comes home and finds his Aunt sitting on his bed. She is staring at the hermit crab saying “he needs a friend.” She goes to the pet store and buys twenty hermit crabs. They put some nail polish on sluggo (the original hermit crab) so they can remember who he is.
Finally, after Michael got the hermit crab Esther was using it to bond with Michael. This story shows that Michael and Esther had to go through tough times and difficult changes together. In
His Aunt Esther tries to get close to Michael through something he likes. She uses his hermit crab Sluggo. Michael begins to like his Aunt after this. For example, in paragraph 49, Michael and his Aunt Esther go to the pet store to get a friend for Sluggo. At the pet store Michael makes a small connection with his Aunt.
Faith and Forgiveness “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly father will forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). and she’s not on the phone when he gets home. In the end, Esther gets the idea to buy Sluggo, the crab, a companion. She makes a scene in the store of how great the crabs are and buys every single one of them, Esther and Michael talk later and they bond through his dead mother. This story shows that Michael’s feelings for his aunt Esther changed.
After getting Sluggo, Aunt Esther and Michael are having a good relationship. They end up working out their bad relationship with one another. For example in paragraph 60 the author said “Aunt Esther, who had not embraced anyone in years, gently put her arm about his shoulders.” Also, in paragraph 64 Michael says “No Aunt Esther,” “I don’t hate you.” This is important because Michael admitted he does not hate Aunt Esther.
When they got mad at each other, Michael got a pet to keep him company. When Aunt Esther got interested it was a time they didn’t fight. When they get a ton of them that brought them together they realized this is how life is going to be with them for now on. In the end they realized his parents were gone and Aunt Esther realized she had a sun+ now and a lot of crabs. In the end the lesson learned was to always care for each other and don’t always fight and to love each other.
Economics and Psychology in Appalachia, An Analysis of the Novel: Above the Waterfall In the novel Above the Waterfall, Ron Rash decides to focus on the main theme of Loss. The culture within the beautiful ecosystem of Appalachia is encased with family ties that are hard to deny. Rash writes, “In a county this rural, everyone’s connected, if not by blood, then in some other way” from the relationship between Darby and Gerald to the friendship between Les and Becky, their relationships show a true loyalty to the ones they have grown up with and show that Appalachia is a tight knit community (Rash 90). The characters within the novel: Above the Waterfall demonstrate signs of loss of self, domestic violence, as well as poverty.
Various minority groups have long histories of oppression, including Native Americans, and the brutality that they endured in the past has shaped their race today. In an attempt to advocate for better conditions, Native Americans are spreading awareness for a greater future. Linda Hogan is a writer of Chickasaw Native descent and often incorporates “Southeastern tribal histories and [native] spirits and culture” (Wikipedia contributors) in her work. “Tear” takes on the perspective of a Chickasaw Native, first in the past recounting hardships, then to the present to reflect on the speaker’s connection to others in her tribe. The poem also describes the environment that surrounds natives and the neglection of their lives.
“Shells” By Cynthia Rylant is a realistic story about a boy who lost his parents and has to live with his Aunt Esther even though they both argue. In the beginning, Esther let's Michael move in with her. Soon, Michael adopts a hermit crab that Esther doesn't like. Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.
In the end Esther and Michael buy 22 hermit crabs to live with the singular one Michael had bought. Esther marks the one that Michael had bought before with red nail polish. This story shows that Michael and Esther's relationship changes throughout the story. In the beginning, Michael and Esther often yell and fight due to a poor relationship.
There always a better roundt. Think positive, in the beginning of the story Michael and aunt Esther were fighting about if Michael like her and where he was. I think that Michael was getting mad after a while at Aunt Esther. For example, in paragraph 8, the author says,”don't yell at me.” Which
The concept of cultural identity has become increasingly important in our globalized world. Indigenous cultures across the globe have been especially vulnerable to erasure, colonization, and marginalization. As such, there has been a growing movement towards reclaiming and asserting Indigenous cultural identity. In Eden Robinson's novel Monkey Beach, language and storytelling hold a significant place in the reclamation and assertion of Indigenous cultural identity.
The terrible accusation I made," "Later, I learned that you were telling the truth all the time, Mike. That I'd been wrong..." (pg.5) She felt guilty and after all those years she finally realized it. As shown above this shows that Mike's grandma needed closure from her guilt that she kept.
