Often individuals grow a sense of shame towards their culture. Said individuals will try to minimize or shield their cultural involvement to hide what they are so humiliated by—their bones, their blood. In the short story, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Victor, a Native American who has recently found out his father has passed away and how he must journey with his cousin, Thomas Builds-the-Fire, to collect his father’s remains and property. By navigating through
Song of Solomon, a novel written by Toni Morrison in 1977 spans over the course of 30 years during which the protagonist, Macon Dead, embarks on a quest for cultural identity. In a small excerpt retrieved from the novel’s first chapter, we see how Macon observes his estranged sister Pilate, along with her daughter and granddaughter, through a window. Through the narrator’s vivid descriptions, symbolic setting, and witty comparisons, Morrison conveys a conflicted relationship between the observer and the observed. In this piece, Morrison utilizes vivid diction that works on multiple levels. For example, in the text he uses specific phrases to create a image and representation as if we (the readers) are present.
One day while the kids were at school and Velma went to the laundromat , she returned to find her house on fire and Thomas died from smoke inhalation . Velma’s suffering appeared short after another misfortune continued. A few months after Thomas died another fire broke out this time destroying the home. Later Velma and her children fled to Velma’s parents and waited for the insurance check.
In “Forged by Fire” by Sharon M. Draper, Gerald, the main character in the story, grows into a brave man. In the beginning, Gerald starts a fire in his mom’s apartment. Gerald gets scared from the flames, sounds, and heat that he goes behind the couch to hide from the fire. After the fire, Gerald lives with his aunt. On Geralds’s 9th birthday, Gerald’s mom came to the house with a sister for Gerald, but he doesn’t want to see neither of the two.
The speaker discloses that his children have been “gathered like a small cloud [and have become] . . . steam weeping on the window” (ll. 32-35). The speaker uses this final comparison of his children to weeping clouds to convince his grandpa that his life is not irredeemable and his presence is still needed in this world. In conclusion, through Gary Soto’s usage of powerful imagery, precise descriptions, and an absence of rhythm, he evokes a sense of sympathy for the community where he grew up while telling a beautiful story.
Literary Analysis of “Waxen Wings” Failure is a grueling issue to consider even if it’s a natural way of life. Ha Songnan’s “Waxen Wings” expresses to never give up on your dreams because sometimes it takes failure to discover achievement. The nameless South Korean girl, “Birdie”, travels back to her childhood. As a child and even as an adult she has a brilliant imagination that consists of flying; yet, imagination is a ignominy in her culture.

The Captivating Tale of a Man Named Victor The short story titled, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix” by Sherman Alexie presents a somber tone, describing the tragedy that encompasses Victor’s life. Shortly after losing his job, he discovers that his father, who he was hardly in contact with, has passed (Alexie 246). He embarks on a journey with his old friend, Thomas Builds-the-Fire, to his father’s home.
When FDR said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself,” he explains when being afraid of something, one must face their fear. If one avoids it, it will stay with them and will not go away unless it is confronted. He is saying that the fear of something is probably worse than the event turns out to become. Furthermore, It is the weakness of the imagination that compels us to do the unimaginable—the unspoken. People must only be scared of being scared, as fear itself destroys them.
Stories are the foundation of relationships. They represent the shared lessons, the memories, and the feelings between people. But often times, those stories are mistakenly left unspoken; often times, the weight of the impending future mutes the stories, and what remains is nothing more than self-destructive questions and emotions that “add up to silence” (Lee. 23). In “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, Lee uses economic imagery of the transient present and the inevitable and fear-igniting future, a third person omniscient point of view that shifts between the father’s and son’s perspective and between the present and future, and emotional diction to depict the undying love between a father and a son shadowed by the fear of change and to illuminate the damage caused by silence and the differences between childhood and adulthood perception. “A Story” is essentially a pencil sketch of the juxtaposition between the father’s biggest fear and the beautiful present he is unable to enjoy.
In Sherman Alexie’s short story, “War Dances,” the narrator unravels in thoughts and takes us through events in his life. He picks up by speaking about a cockroach that ends up dying in his Kafka baggage from a trip to Los Angeles. The cockroach still appears many times throughout the story. The narrator spends quality time in the hospital with his father, who is recovering from surgery due to diabetes and alcoholism, all along the way while he, himself, discovers he might have a brain tumor, leading his right ear to talk about his father. Using a style of tragedy and care both incorporate together a symbolic story that would make even a plain reader feel touched, leading to the major occurrence of a theme of the importance of family.

In William Faulkner’s story “Barn Burning”, the reader sees a young boy who struggles with his relationship with his father Abner Snopes. Sarty, the young boy, knows what his father has done is wrong. Because of this he is stuck in between being faithful to his father and family and telling the truth about what his father has done. As the story progresses it is easy for readers to see him struggle more and more with trying to keep his father’s actions a secret. He begins to think about himself and the consequences he could face for what Abner is doing.
The scene then changes to the narrator’s childhood, a lonely one at it. “I lay on the bed and lost myself in stories,” he says, “I liked that. Books were safer than other people anyway.” The main narrative starts as he recalls a
