Music has multiple benefits to people’s learning and development. Some examples are: improvement of memorization, emotional development, kinesthetic memory, spatial intelligence, pattern recognition, development of sensitivity, among many other. It is particularly helpful for children, since “the game of music making” starts as just that, a game. Even then, it is incredible to see how deep this game can become for them. This festival featured programs for Orchestra, Chamber Music and private instrument lessons. The Orchestra program in particular had two main orchestras: one designed for high school students and Sewanee Symphony, the highlight of the festival, designed for college and advanced high school students. Consequently, all of us wanted to be in that orchestra. Hence, I found myself practicing anywhere between 4 to 6 hours everyday in order to keep up with the competition and finally was rewarded with the opportunity to play with Sewanee Symphony. This experience absolutely planted the desire to pursue excellence in music and was the type of musical environment I wanted for myself in the future: a healthy competitive atmosphere where music is the most important
