Tommi Christoff Dr. Johnson-Lewis HUM 1020 Shirin Neshat: A Visual Artist Shirin Neshat was born in 1957 in Qazvin, Iran. She moved to America after graduating at age seventeen and has lived there since. Neshat grew up to be a visual artist who mainly works in video. She started making videos in the late nineties, mostly being concerned with the evening news. The majority of people view her work as political and melodramatic. Neshat’s work is not just that, but passionate and sincere. The theme of her work takes on the social, cultural, and religious codes of Muslim societies, as well as the oppositions.
