Samira Ahmed’s realistic fiction novel, Love, Hate, and Other Filters, takes place in modern-day Chicago where a suicide bombing has engrossed the attention of America. Maya Aziz, a Muslim teenager, is targeted for her heritage while attempting to lead a life free of high school drama, controlling parents, and difficult relationships. As Maya copes with Islamophobia, prejudice against Muslims, she begins to understand the horrors and shortcomings of violence. One lesson the story suggests is that hatred is an infectious and blinding motive. From the very beginning of the story, readers are familiarized with the source of terrorism through thorough description and sentence structure.
An original viewpoint on Islam, gender, and identity is found in Leila Ahmed's memoir, A Border Passage. Ahmed compares her experience with "women's Islam" throughout the book with the more formal "men's" Islam she encountered in Egypt throughout her upbringing. In this essay, two to three examples of these disparities will be seen, and I will discuss which interpretation of Islam is more accurate. The role of women in prayer is one instance of how men's and women's Islam differ from one another. Ahmed explains how women's Islam gave them the freedom to pray at home, in private, and without having to strictly abide by conventional Islamic laws.

For Mariam, Rasheed’s abuse reveals her willingness to sacrifice for what she loves. From Mariam’s endurance, to Rasheed’s abuse, to her ultimate sacrifice, she becomes a strong woman in juxtaposition to the impassiveness of how he treated her once before. By adding cruelty to the novel, Hosseini adds depth and complexity to the characters, revealing their values and other character traits. In another way, Hosseini also reveals how cruelty in itself is driven by self interest.

Through the struggles that the characters of A Thousand Splendid Suns faced in the patriarchal Afghani culture, Khaled Hosseini delivers his feminist ideas. For her whole life, Nana endured the troubles given by men, and she is one of the “fallen female warrior” of the novel because she fought against the oppression and lost, due to the unfortunate circumstances of her life. Mariam also suffered the torments imposed on her by the men in her life, sharing a similar fate as her mother, Nana, in a way.
During the Islamic Revolution, religion was very important to the fundamentalist Islamic regime that took power over the secular state. In her graphic memoir, Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi, a spiritual young girl, suffers a deep loss of faith due to the oppressive fundamentalist religion in Iran. This loss of faith causes Marji to experience disillusionment and a loss of identity, which greatly shapes her character. Through her experiences with God, Satrapi comments on the difference between spirituality and fundamentalist religion and displays the negative repercussions of an oppressive religious state.

Marjane Satrapi is an outspoken female, who is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in. After the Iranian Revolution, it became compulsory for women to wear the veil as the Islamic dress code and all women were removed from government positions, leading to increasing oppression and inequality in Iran. The use of black and white on the first page of the book creates a very clear image that a lot of people are unhappy with the new rules that are introduced by the government. The use of images shows us the oppression of freedom in a way that it would be hard to imagine with words. The first panel shows Marjane in a somber mood, crossing her arms to show her defensive thinking against the veil and the world. In the following panel, the girl’s expressions range from neutral to dislike or discomfort, which shows the general thoughts from people on how they think of the veil.
In “Some Are Born to Sweet Delight” written by Nadine Gordimer, foreigners and especially Arabs are portrayed as poor, secretive and different as opposed to the Westerners who are classified as “normal”. Gordimer represents this negative portrayal through the characterization of Rad and Vera. The negative representation of foreigners is made to underline and criticize the stereotypes and generalizations that Westerners tend to make about them. In this short story, Gordimer focuses on Arabs as her main representation of foreign populations.
