Because of all of the hits to the head, thousands of athletes experience brain damage, sometimes resulting in death. Over the past few years, the NFL and partnering organizations have taken steps to protect these athletes, but there is a limit to how much technology can do. Humans were simply not designed to take a beating as is given in tackle football. With its new concussion protocol rules, the NFL claims to have found a temporary solution to the problem, but new findings show that concussions are not the main problem. Most of the damage is done in the ordinary contact that occurs hundreds of times every game.
With the recent advances in technology the head injuries experienced by National Football League players has been made more noticeable to the public. So the public has raised an eyebrow, questioning who will take responsibility to battle the issue of brain injuries in the National Football League. This subject involving player safety isn’t anything new, “In fact, a quick search of historical press reports shows that football related concussions have been associated with deaths and debilitating injuries since the late 1800s”(Lange 178). In football one of the most important parts are player safety. In fact, players wear equipment such as helmets, to help prevent head injuries.
As an avid NFL fan over the years, and someone who has watched many games, I have noticed the NFL’s shortcomings in protecting the safety of its players C. Thesis: There are many topics of discussion when it comes to the NFL concussion
Concussions in sport are a public health issue and it is important to correctly attend to them so that players lessen their risk of sequels. Concussions are invisible injuries that are consequences of a knock on the head that then causes the brain to accelerate then decelerate (Echemendia, 2012; Caron, Bloom, Johnston & Sabiston, 2013). This leaves the rest of body with a force that is transmitted to the head and often there is no full recovery (Echemendia, 2012; Caron et al.,
According to an article titled “Riddell Unveils Overhauled New Football Helmet SpeedFlex,” the solution may be closer than ever. Just recently, Riddell came out with a new football helmet called the SpeedFlex. Like the Revolution Speed and Riddell 360 helmet, this helmet was designed to reduce the impact of head-to-head concussions.
In 1997, author Bill Plaschke stated That, “Dan Kult, director of technology at Riddell Inc., which makes the official NFL helmet. ‘But what we don't truly understand is how concussions occur.’” Today we know what concussions are. Now we need to create a better helmet that can lower the chances of concussions. Another idea could be adding a microchip to evaluate stress on players and if the impacts are too high the players should be checked by professionals (Starr).
From youth football to the NFL, concussions are prevalent at every age group and skill level. The NFL has helped to look into youth football in a variety of ways including heads up tackle which is a program that teaching athletes to use proper technique when tackling a player as well as fitting these athletes for equipment. By doing this, youth football players learn how to properly tackle someone to absorb a hit as well as give these athletes the least likely chance of having a major traumatic brain injury (Goldberg). Goldberg’s Hypothesis was that if you teach youth players in the sport of football the proper technique of tackling, concussions would not be an issue. Although the NFL has helped make dramatic impacts on the youth games including leagues such as pop warner which roughly over 40% of NFL athletes played in as a child, there are over 650,000 youth players in the United States and because of this large number, they do not track

Being a high-contact sport, football leads, other sports in persistent concussions and has garnered the most attention from the neurolaw/neuroscience community in the recent times. Since November 2011, all the six states have either already enacted or have filed regulation specially targeting the concussions that are related to youth sports. Since the year 2006, at a higher level, the NFL has made numerous amendments in its guidelines concerning the events and return-to- play schedule the moment a player shows symptoms of concussions.
It is no doubt that athletes are getting bigger, faster, and stronger as the year’s progress. This is leading to more physical and faster gameplay, especially in high contact sports like football and hockey. It should be mandatory that all high school athletes, no matter what the sport or gender, take a concussion test providing a baseline score to help diagnose concussions, the severity of the injury, and recovery time. A new form of technology was released around five years ago; however, not enough high schools in America are putting it to use.
Concussions in Sports In sports, concussions occur frequently across all age groups. From little leagues to high school sports to the professional leagues, concussions pose a high risk of long term Traumatic brain injuries. Because of the high rate of concussions in sports more attention should be paid to protocols and treatment to prevent traumatic brain injuries. High school athletes that partake in a sport that requires intense physical activity are the most vulnerable to concussion and need more time to recover. According to the Head Case “High school football accounts for 47 percent of all reported sports concussions, with 33 percent of concussions occurring during practice.”

There is a lot of research and data showing head injuries in football and how they hurt the players. The NFL tries to just sweep these cases away because they know it would hurt the popularity and economical support of the sport. Head injuries and concussions are the most popular injuries in football because of the fact that they are one of the most dangerous injuries a player could have.
Recently over the previous decades, concussions have increasingly received attention in the world of sports. A concussion is a serious head injury that can happen to any player, and in just about any sport. Indeed, it has been happening to a countless number of athletes for centuries. However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground has caused a concussion.
