Is Charlie Gordon Better off before or after the surgery? Charlie Gordon was better off after the surgery more then before. He was better off because Charlie got to learn harder words and his vocabulary developed. He learned how to read at a faster pace then before, he learned who his true friends were and got some lost memories back.
Charlie’s Journey Charlie Gordon experienced many positive things during his surgery. One thing he went through is falling in love with Mrs.Kinnian. Charlie says “I don’t understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss. Kinnian really is.”
i’m ashamed. ”(Keyes 11). Charlie also realized that he really liked Miss kinnian. A quote from the book says “I don’t understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss Kinnian really is. ”(Keyes 15).
My reasons are that, he would have passed up his chance to finally pursue his dreams, he would have gone his whole life without knowing that the people he thought were his true friends are actually just using him for a good laugh and he would have never learned his true feelings about Ms. Kinnian without the operation. First of all, ever since Charlie was a kid, he has always wanted to fit in and be smart. If you were ever in his position, made fun of and unknowing, you would want to do anything to fit in and be smart. Well, he actually got the chance to do that, to be what he´s always wanted, smart. Yes there was a downside to it like becoming dumb again or realizing he has been getting made fun of
Once the family learns that Charlie is coming for a visit, they are all beaming with excitement, especially Charlotte. The family picks
On December 7, 1941, World War II had come to a change. The Japanese’s attack on Pearl Harbor had marked the official entrance of the United States into World War II. The United States was caught completely off guard. The first sign of the Japanese fleet dashing towards Pearl Harbor came about at 7:00 A.M. on December 7, 1941.
" As long as Charlie wasn't making them look good or becoming smarter, they wanted nothing to do with him. Ethics are needed in the world we live in of high rank egos, and pressure to do "what's cool." The doctors in "Flowers for Algernon" were pushed by fame and medical history make an ethical decision on whether or not to do the surgery on Charlie. They did it regardless of the risks, and never informed Charlie of them, either.
All Charlie wanted was to be smart, he had an IQ of 68. Charlie Gordon's doctors didn’t act ethically. Charlie Gordon's doctors did not act ethically because they didn’t tell Charlie any side effects of the surgery, Charlie ended up learning a major side effect of the surgery which he found out was death, he only found out because a Algernon who also was test died from the surgery. The doctors hadn't even been thought the Algernon's test before they started on Charlie they weren't thinking about Charlie because they were thinking about themselves. The doctors only cared about how much fame they would get from this experiment.
Additionally, because the story is in the first person, we can see that Charlie does not understand he is being made fun
However, after the surgery, Charlie finds intelligence was a nice treat but was far from an importance in life and only took him away from what truly mattered. One could believe Charlie was wrong to undergo the surgery because of the side effects that came with the surgery such as physical and emotional instability, and amnesia, the depresion it came with, and how he lost all of his friends and loved ones with his extreme intelligence. First off, one reason Charlie should not have gotten the surgery is the depression and suicidal thoughts it came with for
John Stuart Mills believes that America & the rest of the world should stop pushing for happiness. John Stuart tells America that more than half who's trying to pursue happiness are usually still on the same road they were on the previous year. In this argument I will show you why John Stuart Mills and I argue about this situation. I agree with John Stuart Mills argument that we should not search for happiness. One example A man named Carlyle was notoriously cranky, but his central insight- that happiness would raise expectations that could never possibly be fulfilled.
Helpless and clueless Charlie doesn’t know any better than not to care which is his way of being ignorant. Charlie, just being himself doesn’t care what others think, but he does not know that he is being clueless. However, after the operation Charlie thought “it was good about finding out that people were laughing at him”. Charlie had an eye-opening experience which was rough but he is glad he had it. Sad but relieved were Charlie’s feelings after he understands the truth.
Before Charlie got the operation, Charlie would never have the confidence to help anyone. In addition to the operation, Charlie got to experience friendship and love. Charlie got to experience friendship and love like a normal human being. “The thought of leaving her behind made me sad.
For example, on page 299, “I felt sick inside as I looked at his dull, vacuous smile, the wide bright eyes of a child, uncertain but easy to please. And I had been laughing at him too. Suddenly, I was furious at myself and all those who were laughing at him.” Here, Charlie was realizing that people were mean and rude to people who weren’t like them. That people looked down to people who were different than them or not as smart.
There is a lot of evidence that Charlie will die. This is shown because Algernon went through the same side effects and died. Charlie also understands this and he writes ’Everyone identifies me with Algernon in a way we’re both the first of our kind.’ This shows that because of the relation towards the surgery they will come out with the same result and that means that Charlie will also die. During the end of the story, Charlie understands that he will most likely die from the surgery also because he has been through the same side effects and surgery as Algernon, he died and this shows that Charlie will do the same Charlie explains that ’ guess the same thing is or will soon be happening to me’ this proves that he will die because Charlie is smart enough to know what will be happening to himself because his IQ is about 200 and he is very smart so his prediction must be correct.
