4. What does the story of Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller tell us about the Cold War culture? How did these men speak through their work? What do On the Waterfront and The Crucible tell us about this period in American history? Fear of the communism and the atomic bomb was gigantic during the Cold War.

The main idea of “The Charmer” is the changing perspective the protagonist Winifred has on the tragedies befallen on her family. Family conflict is a predominant theme in the story and all members of her family directly face it. The narrator uses her elder brother Zach’s smothered childhood, charming personality and rebellious nature to create internal family conflict. The narrator begins her story as a young girl who, along with her two sisters and mother, unconditionally serves Zach as his obedient slaves.
Kit Cahill had everything going for him. He’d moved out of his small town and moved to Atlanta after high school. He’d even landed a job working for the premier hair salon, Tony’s. Life had been great. It was surprising just how quickly all of that could be ripped from his grasp.

“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Connor, after studying this story I found many interesting aspects of the story. First off, I was fascinated by how the grandmother consistently talked about how she met with a “good man”, and how changed as the story went on. At the beginning of the story, the grandmother spoken to the restaurant owner that he was a “good man” after letting two men charge their gasoline on credit and not paying directly for it. In this case, her definition of “good” seems to include poor judgment and unsuspecting, none of which are really “good” traits for a man to have.
Do you think that Sucker becoming a tough kid is a good thing? I think that Sucker is going to end up going down the wrong path in life. One that leads to drugs, teen pregnancies, and a lot of other dangerous things in life. He might end up dropping out of school to be the ‘cool/tough’ kid. He will not have an education and he might end up on the streets without a home just because he was wanting to be his ‘own self’.
In the 1953 short story titled “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, readers are given a glimpse of what the end of the story may look like through use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and other literary techniques. Although the story looks to be an innocent story of a family who travels to Florida for vacation at the start of it, readers soon find out that the story has a darker twist to it. This family trip turns violent and this gruesome ending can easily represent the violence taking place in America during the time this story was written by O’Connor and even today. The short story starts off with a family of six- parents, a grandmother, and three children-

becoming a better person. It also shows us how important it is for people not to judge others for superficial reasons. With a minimum of dialogue, this story sends out a major message. Charlie Lavery is the main protagonist, who works as a Pilot on his way to Yellowknife in the Yukon territory, when this short story begins. He was a Military bomber pilot in the war and believed that he was capable of taking care of himself no matter what the situation.
The short story “Sucker” by Carson McCullers portrays the one-sided admiration expressed by the main character’s younger cousin, Richard, towards him, as well as his own towards his crush. McCullers conveys the idea of the story through characterization and irony of the way the main character, Pete’s treatment of Richard, previously referred to as Sucker, parallels the treatment he received from his crush, Maybelle. Pete consistently took advantage of Richard because he was always eager to please his older brother figure, much like Maybelle was only nice to Pete as long as he was useful to her. In the end, after losing both his love interest and the respect of Richard, Pete learns that those who are cruel to others typically do so because they remind them of themselves. Characterization plays a large role in the development of the theme.
As I read the story about the pizzeria man, I noticed how the author uses dialogue to develop the characters in the short story. The story is a simple concept, of a boy buying a slice of pizza, but shows character development. In the story, the pizzeria owner sells a pizza slice to a boy. Throughout the piece, he becomes more open minded. Going from keeping his nose in a magazine, to being able to welcome company into his shop.
