One of the most important things that most people don’t consider anymore is the effect a divorce can have on their children. In today’s society, divorce is seen in such a different way than it should be and isn’t taken very seriously. A divorced is defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the ending of a marriage by a legal process” or “a complete separation of two things.” In other words, it means the separation of a family. Parents who are looking at getting a divorce need to consider the effects it may bring on their children. There are many short term effects, psychological problems, emotional problems, social issues, and positive outcomes that can and will be thrown onto a child's shoulders after suffering through the divorce of their parents. …show more content…
Some children experience these effects as the divorce is happening or some may breeze through the divorce with no problem but may start to see effects later on in life that can be life threatening; which are known as long term effects. These effects can differ from the age of your child. For instance, if your child is younger they may not understand the situation and will often start to feel guilty or responsible for what happened. The loss of a parent is “extremely sad to a child of up to 5 or 6 because they start to feel that their needs aren’t going to be attended to as well as they would be with both parents around.”(Divorce Impacts a Child Emotionally, Mentally and Academically) But generally, he or she will just start to become more needy for attention out of fear of being abandoned which can cause depression. There are many other short term effects that can cause long term effects but rarely do they carry on with a child after they’ve adjusted to the lifestyle of not living with both
