Backpacks: Rags To Riches

Who would ever think of taking away a fireman's hose? Or taking away a baby's bottle? Or taking away a police officer's uniform? Or even taking away a student's backpack? That is exactly what happened after a facilitator tripped over one and got seriously hurt at South Western High School 10 years ago. Although that was 10 years ago, I think it is time to rethink backpacks being available under certain regards. Students at South Western High School should be allowed to carry backpacks throughout the school day because they benefit learning, save time and do NOT pose a safety threat.

First, backpacks benefit learning by keeping students organized. How many times have students arrived to class unprepared there for not prepared to learn? Since backpacks have multiple pockets and compartments, students can transport essential learning materials like binders, pencils, textbooks, and papers. Imagine you have to travel from one class in the 100 hall to your next class in the S hall, It takes 2 minutes to arrive at your locker, 1-2 minutes to retrieve your materials, and another 3 minutes to get to your next class. Some students have so much work to put in the binder that it takes valuable time to get to your next class. If you just shove your papers in your binder it makes your binder cumbersome to carry around the halls and what if you drop your materials and your papers fall out of your binder. Moreover teachers won't have to lose class time by writing locker passes for students. Lastly, students don’t have time to use the bathroom for personal business like, phone calls to a parent, bathroom stops will be faster, and person health issues that might need
