Currently, there is a lot of speculation about if college should be free or not, so should it be? The cost of college is drastically increasing with many colleges’ tuition increasing by thousands of dollars every year. There has been a solution that has been created for this problem: free college. Although it seems like a good solution that benefits everyone, there are many people that oppose this. While there are people that advocate for no free college, making college free would create more advantages for everyone because free college would not negatively affect students’ credit scores, improve the worker shortage, and give many students future opportunities.

Taking out loans for college can affect them financially because it can determine if they can take out more loans for other costly things. A recent graduate in a video from PBS News Hour shares her personal experience with student debt, stating that, “The debt itself has affected me buying a house, I couldn’t cosign my own loan because I had too much student debt”(Fons, 00:00:18-00:00:26). These large student loans not only affect this graduate, but it also prevents thousands of people every year from getting essential material and other deeply desired luxuries. This debt can last for many years, affecting the amount of time it would take for them to be able to afford these items. A financial advisor has stated that, “on average we’re seeing it’s taking 10 to 20 years for students to pay off their loans, in some cases even longer”(Fons, 00:02:13-00:02:21). Because of the increase in college tuition cost, it is taking decades for these students to pay off college tuition loans. Making college free for students struggling with financial issues would prevent them from having to deal with this long-term debt. People with a college education have better jobs than people with only a high school diploma. Making college free would give people the chance to give themselves a better future without having to make large sacrifices. According to CNBC, college graduates’ weekly wages are 80% higher than high school graduates’(). People with college degrees are more likely to get a nicer job and have access to many more other ones. Going to college opens up many opportunities for graduates. Making college free would also encourage many more people to apply for a higher education because there would be little to no risk of losing money. “The message that ‘college is free’ would encourage more people to apply than would have otherwise, bringing down the economic barrier to education—and that’s a good thing”(). Giving people the impression that college is free would result in more people trying to get into colleges, which is a positive thing.
