American football is a highly profitable sporting spectacle whether its at the collegiate or professional level. I cannot disagree that football does not boost the American economy. I don’t agree that the players participating at their own risk for future benefit don’t get paid while playing such a dangerous sport. Another issue I have with organized football that almond touches on, is the mass wasting of resources in institutions around the country like the universities in the S.E.C. When looking at the massive increase in top football programs salaries around the nation one has to wonder why some of those money cant go to the players, or why it isn’t funneled into educational purposes for the universities? In the documentary Should College Football be Banned, Buzz Bissinger author of, Friday Night Lights, purposed that college teams could license out their names privately (Bissinger). This would be a major benefit to collegiate football in America. Not only would it divided the blurred barrier between college sports and college academia, it would provide players with the opportunity to make money while earning education. Too much funding is spent on collegiate sports like football and not enough is being given to benefit the true reason people go to college, for an expensive, but yet worth it education. Privatization of collegiate football could also lead to a higher focus on player’s health. If the players are making salaries while their playing football then its in the best interests of the privately owned organization to keep those players healthy. Whereas when NCAA football players get seriously injured they are benched and sometimes eventually stop playing the game. These measures specifically are applicable to NCAA football, they are already in place in the NFL and that has shown to have a minimal effect on the amount of players that are actually injured. So what should the NFL do in order to to create preventative health measures for the benefit of their players? Almond mentions in his book that the NFL should implement pre game health screening so that the league could determine if player was eligible to take the field or not on a given day.
