As US citizens we are born with basic human rights. Those rights include the ones mentioned in the First Amendment such as freedom of speech and freedom of expression, but are we really trusted to make significant decisions? The establishment of the electoral college makes it seem as if we are not. The Electoral College is an indirect system for electing the United States president using Electoral College votes, these votes are cast by each state, using a slate of electors. In order to assure a fair election, the electoral college should be abolished because it does not fairly represent the will and voice of all the people, it gives small states excess amount of power, and it has a negative impact on third parties. The Electoral College does not fairly represent the voice of the entire US population, the Popular Vote is what does. It is undemocratic for a presidential candidate to win the Popular Vote, which voices the opinion of the US population, yet only to lose the Electoral College which is voted …show more content…

Mathematically speaking there is a total of 538 electors which reside in the states. The number of votes is distributed within the states based on population. A more populous state will have more votes than a state with less people. All states are ensured a minimum of 3-4 votes and depending on the more people residing in that particular state, then the more electoral votes they are granted. For example, states with larger populations such as California has a total of 55 electoral votes, but in reality should have 65 if one were to do the math. However, those missing 10 votes are being distributed to other small states such as Rhode Island because states with smaller populations must have a minimum of 3-4 votes (Document D). The Electoral College is taking away power from the larger states to give to the smaller states, ultimately giving the less populous states too much
