The electoral college this is the process the country has been using since 1804 when the 12th amendment was passed. This process was used so that the country would not have to use the popular vote because it gave an unfair advantage to the bigger more populated states. For a candidate to become President of the United States, he or she must be able to attain 270 electoral votes to become president-elect. Currently there are 538 members of the electoral college.(U.S. Electoral College). Electors are chosen according to Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution says that current federal employees can’t be electors, specifically, a “Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.”(US Const. amend. XII, article. II sec. 2). This means you can be in an elected position in the United States Government and be an elector. It does however need to be updated to better fit the needs when electing our country. Republicans have also pushed for the reform of the electoral college. The Democrats want to go off the popular vote while Republicans want the Electoral College votes to be divided proportionally. (Fox News) This would greatly benefit everyone in the United States because when the votes are divided proportionally in each state that would give a better advantage to the American people because their voices would be better heard in the election process of the President. This way gives the states the ability to vote for different candidates according to the region the people that resided in it. The states are then not forced to give all their votes to just one candidate. This new system would be the best thing for the country to adopt to elect our next president with. If this system fails, then our country can go back to the original electoral college. For this to work both the Republicans and the Democrats need to come together to figure the best way to update our system.
