What would you think if a presidential candidate got over 2 million more votes than the other candidate, but still lost? Does that seem fair to you? Well that sort of thing is exactly what the Electoral College does. The Electoral College is the unfair voting system America still uses to pick their president that needs to be abolished and changed to a popular vote system. The Electoral College is the current voting system used in America to elect their president. The Electoral College’s creation dates all the way back to 1877 when the Founding Fathers (George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson) decided this was how the country should pick their president. Blanche Lincoln said: “Voters must have faith in the Electoral process for our democracy to succeed,” but the problem is people don’t have faith. In fact according to Vox out of a sample of 1,084, 62% believed that a popular vote system would be a more fitting system to use compared to the Electoral College. Even our current president, Donald Trump, tweeted: “The electoral college is a disaster for our democracy.” Although he has changed his stance (most likely) due to the fact that he won the election only thanks to the Electoral College. Gene Green, a U.S. representative in Texas, stated, “Every citizen’s vote should count in America… The Electoral College was necessary when communications were poor, literacy was low and voters lacked information about out-of-state figures, which is clearly no longer the case.” As you can see the Electoral College is not trusted or wanted by many residents of America. The fact that the government isn’t listening to their citizen’s voices and even those within the government is dishonorable and this problem that is the Electoral College should be tended to, if not immediately, within the time span of the present to the 2020
