EPCC should consider the implementation of metal detector in every building of campus, because it will help detect who is carrying a weapon. Metal detectors can give the officers a way to inspect students who carry guns in campus. According to Seattle Pi “a form of deterrent because visitors to the school know they will be searched and may think twice about carrying a weapon.” This example explains how every student would avoid to bring weapons because it would be detected. Therefore EPCC would prevent the shooting incident from happening inside campus grounds.

During recent years there has been an escalation of gun crimes. Due to the recent escalation of gun crimes arguments such as “Universities should/should not allow concealed guns on campuses,” have been brought up. Some states have now begun to change their gun control regulations on campuses, some have even pushed forth to allow individual institution to make the decision to allow guns on their campuses themselves. There are numerous arguments about guns on campuses. Some of the arguments for anti-guns on campuses are that guns will incite more violence and will possibly distract from the learning environment.

Students need to properly educate the public on the benefits of carrying guns on the campus. By states not allowing guns on campus it is making a target for the shootings. Imagine its an ordinary day at your college, everything happening in perfect sync and it is normal but all of a sudden you hear a gunshot, then another one and it keeps happening? Imagine this situation and you have nothing to protect yourself with, now imagine it with you having a gun with you to protect yourself from the shooter, wouldn’t that make you feel safe and secure? Many reasons are held accountable for why guns are unacceptable on campus. More guns on campus rises the possibility for unaccredited access to firearms by the wrong people. The chance of the wrong person getting access to a “good guy’s” gun is a larger chance than the gun being used to save student and faculty lives. Guns can be accidentally left anywhere; in purses, jacket pockets, and lawful users can be outdo people outside of campus. Professors and faculty members are not taught to handle firearm combat in a characterized environment.

Several studies mention that licensed concealed carry weapons aren’t involved in crimes that happen on campus. Certain individuals that do commit crimes on and off campus, generally don’t go through background checks to obtain legal concealed weapons. Gun permit requirements vary by state but most require that applicants are the legal minimum age, complete a safety course and have sound criminal and mental histories (Collins). Allowing students to carry concealed weapons on campus could be considered dangerous; however, having these students’ complete safety courses and go through testing that proves they are mentally capable could prevent it from being dangerous. Certain campuses also don’t allow students to carry conceal in classrooms or in dorms.
Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one.
Mass shootings have been a major issue in this country. One common place these shootings take place is on school grounds. These events keep happening with really no solution to put an end to these tragedies. Recently, a bill had been proposed in Wisconsin that would lift the ban on guns in campus buildings in UW schools. This means more guns on campus.
Sometimes there are not enough policemen on the campus to help protect students from insane individuals. Perhaps a student with a concealed weapon can protect students with their own personal gun. However, guns on campus could result into tragedies. A student having guns on campus could enact on killing innocent students. Guns shouldn’t be permitted for students on college campuses.
As handguns become more accessible to a larger variety of persons within a limited area the rates will rise due to availability (Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, 2013). Overall guns on campuses will result in the cons heavily outweighing the pros. There are more efficient ways to keep students safe than allowing concealed handguns on college campuses. Allowing firearms will escalate sparse occurrences of school shootings. Suicidal deaths among the student population will also increase as more than half of all college students already consider suicide, the presence of a firearm will only increase the risk more (Neuberger, Joan and Spiro, Ellen, 2015).
But even if we do this does not mean that more deaths will not occur as a result of this, in the heat of the moment people are not going to be thinking about what is the safest thing to do they are just going to shoot. So it is not safe at all to allow any type of guns in the college campus. Lastly, permitting guns in the college campus in very unsafe thing to do. If we allow guns in college, students in the dorms might steal it and commit even more violence. It is very possible that gun can go off by accident.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Guns on campuses make the vulnerable even more vulnerable. Even though having guns on campus would improve response time, having guns on campus would also increases the chances of a confrontation escalating and turning lethal.
