Nigger. This word was used a total of 219 times in Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Some people find the use of this word in mark Twain’s book very insulting, while others say it is a part of literature and it is a part of his book. During the time that Mark Twain wrote America was still very fragile from the Civil War, and that is one of the reasons that so many people were upset about the book, because they were still sensitive to the topic of slavery and racism. No one wanted to deal with the issues that were being brought up in Twain’s writing, so they got angry, and people are still divided today about whether we should censor this book or not. The things that took place back then should not be sugar coated, because they happened and everyone needs to be made aware of it. That is why this book should not be censored, and because it would not be doing Mark Twain and his writing any justice.
The main reason that this book should not be censored is the fact that the past is the past. Twain very accurately depicts the feelings and the attitudes in that era, and this is so important. “The past is what it is, immutable and non-negotiable” (Pitts).
