In the book, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit is a young girl who leaves her home in Barbados, and travels by ship (along with a sailor boy named Nat) to live with her Aunt Rachel in Connecticut. As the ship pulls into Connecticut, she notices a young girl named Prudence accidentally drop her doll into the water.
