Professional Sports Facilities Funding with Public Money Let say the government decides to take a large percentage of money from the taxpayers’ salaries and say that the money will go for a good cause. Sounds great, but what if those taxpayers found out that the money collected was used to fund for the construction of professional sports stadiums that have been proven to show little economic growth in a community according to. “Research has shown that stadium investments generally don’t sow economic growth” (LOU). There has been much evidence showing that after the construction of a stadium here is still more money spent to operate the stadium according too, “Lease terms tend to benefit team owners and cost the public money additional taxes were often needed to offset the operating costs” (Lou). This supports the claim and shows that more tax money is needed to maintain operating a stadium. “Who pays for the police to patrol the stadium? Sounds like the use of more taxpayer funds to me” (Moore). This gives more evidence on how more tax money is used to fund the stadiums after being built to run and operate the stadium.
Professional facilities should not be used to fund with public money because that money can be used for better things that can help a community benefit more. “Congressman Louis Stokes (D-Ohio) noted that “local governments struggle to provide public services such as schools, libraries, police and fire departments, and other essentials community services while millions of dollars are diverted to retain or attract sport teams” (Lou). People include NBA, NFL, and MLB owners and they would support the construction of professional sport facilities with public money because of financial reason and they would not have to pay a lot of their own money because the government would use tax money to build the stadiums. People would also support the construction of stadiums with public money because they could think that the stadiums could bring a lot of money and help the economy of their community. But this would not be true because some research has shown that stadiums don’t show a lot of economic growth on a community (Lou). Also the stadiums wouldn’t help the community a lot being proven because in communities taxes increase with significant numbers in order to support the construction of professional sport facilities
