It was not until my junior and senior year of high school when I started appreciating the novels we read in school. Most of the books we read went above my head, but as I did more research and participated more in class discussions, essays, and group projects I started to get a more understanding and having actual debates on the themes. Overall, my favorite book I read in high school was The Sun Also Rises by Earnest Hemingway. Today, I am still a fan of Earnest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. They are a dynamic duo. Both Hemingway and Fitzgerald, concentrated and wrote novels based off the 1920s. They painted a picture with words of how America went from caring about morals and values to life is short, so live it to the fullest. If I had a time machine, the 1920s would definitely be my first stop. Hemingway displayed through the characters that the way of life is all about traveling, committing adultery, and being intoxicated daily. Changes were brought for men and women in the United States during the 1920s. Women were becoming more independent and trashy, and not your typical Little House on the Prairie. There was no such thing as a “Southern gentleman”. While reading The Sun Also Rises, Ms. Peterson, my teacher at the time, made the comment that today’s society is replaying The Sun Also Rises. Unfortunately, I agree with her statement. Most adolescents portray the image that as long as you have your lover and money then everything is splendid.
