Do you believe The Catcher in the Rye should be banned from all libraries? The Catcher in the Rye is a novel that was written back in the 1950’s by an author named J.D. Salinger. It is about a young man named Holden Caulfield who narrates the story. He is a teen that, to begin the novel, is attending a prep school in Pennsylvania. While his parents and sister live in New York City. Through the years people have tried to ban the book from schools, some schools have banished it from their libraries . This novel should not be banned from any library. It provides good insight into the real world for the high school kids that read it. There are lots of people that struggle with depression and mental disorders. Sometimes it could be hard to tell that they have these problems. During the nineteen-fifties people did not know the severities of these ailments so instead of getting them help they would just diagnose them with a minor sickness or send them off somewhere far from home for a while. The Catcher in the Rye does an outstanding job of revealing the troubles that inflict people with depression and mental disabilities. Laying out the problems and symptoms people with mental diseases encounter helps others detect these people. It also helps them realize that people with depression and mental disorders need medical aid and support to help cure them. Diagnosing them with some phony sickness only masks the problem. Going to a psychoanalysis is one of the major treatments people use to help cure mental disease, Holden was even considering meeting a psychoanalysis, “They were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage. I don't blame them. I really don't. I slept in the garage the night he died” (Salinger 44). After all, The Catcher in the Rye can help people understand what it is like to have depression or a mental disorder and how to provide help for someone they know that is struggling with these
