Taxes and our Churches I solemnly believe without a doubt that churches, whatever faith they may be of should be tax exempt. In my opinion, taxing the many churches around this country would cause unresolvable conflict. My reasons being that our country was founded and still operates on a separation of church and state principle, churches provide charitable services that add to the wellbeing of the people of this country such as food and shelter services for the poor, and taxing churches would completely undermine the church and place government above that of the church. Since the founding of our country, state and church were to be separated. This means that the two do not make rules or interfere with one another in any way. It is of our nation’s benefit to keep things this way. By placing taxes on churches the separation of state and church would be broken. This separation is in the First Amendment of our nation’s constitution. We would be breaking the constitution if we were to impose taxes on the churches of this country. If for some reason the churches could not pay their taxes the federal government would be forced to shut them down, thus as aforementioned break the long held separation of church and state. Some opposed to this may say that exempting churches from taxes is a violation of keeping church and state separate, because the government is giving special treatment to the churches. This is arguably wrong because not requiring churches to pay taxes is not a special treatment, it is simply imposing a law that is written in our very constitution. How would the government be able to say it is keeping the separation if it imposed taxes and then shut down churches who were unable to pay their taxes for whatever reason?
