The television sitcom Friends is just one of many shows that can be a great example of sociological concepts. Sociological concepts are mental constructs that represent some parts of the world in a simplified form. Some sociological concepts that have been discussed in class and in the show Friends are sex and gender, religion, race and deviance. Friends is a sitcom about a group of friends who all live in the same apartment building and how they face everyday life in New York. The first example of a sociological concept that I have found in the show Friends can relate to sex and gender. There are many episodes throughout the show that can relate to this sociological concept. In the episode “The One with the Male Nanny” the sensitive emotions portrayed by the male nanny, Sandy, is turned into a laughable joke and viewed as negative or wrong. Another episode where sex and gender can come into play is “The One with the Metaphorical Tunnel” when Ross desperately tries to get his son to play with toys made for boys rather than girls. Like sex and gender, there are many episodes in the show that can relate to this sociological concept. For example, in the episode “The One with Ross’ New Girlfriend”, Rachel foolishly assumes that since his new girlfriend, Julie, is Asian that the does not speak English. Rachel then proceeds to to talk to her slowly and loudly until Julie negates her own diversity. Julie then shouts back at Rachel with “Thank you, I’m from New York.” For a show that takes place in a city as racially diverse as New York, it seems almost odd that they would include this kind of joke. Although it was offensive and racist, it showed exactly how society can react towards races and ethnicities that are unlike their own or apart from the
