The poem is heavily centred around the concept of having a patriarchy and the consequences that it has on women and their roles. Women in the household have been stereotypically seen to be inferior to men, “she wanes while my father waxes.” it states that women have suffered hardships due to their stereotypical roles. The quote is a combination of assonance, juxtaposition and truncated sentences which assists in the conveyance of the implications brought upon through a stereotypical barrier. The burden of inheritance has proved to be troublesome as each generation would inherit unwanted behaviours from the previous generation, “a circular obsession I never wanted”, the use of metaphor describes inheritance as an endless cycle that is repetitively repeated throughout each generation and in doing so it also creates an image in the reader’s mind allowing them to imagine the endless cycle that has been created through inheritance and demonstrating the implications on women as it is something that Myers does not wish to have. Myers refers to the position she is in, in the society, “I have been taught to grow in” she states that she is trapped in a perpetual internal conflict that has been brought upon through inheritance. The juxtaposition of “grow in” highlights the situation that is present it shows that inheritance acts as a barrier for women who wish to change, they have been taught one way and that is to allow men to grow in size and power, this genetic barrier has brought issues as it hinders women’s ability to grow and consume it forces them to avoid taking up space within the society.
