Siblings are an important part of family structures. Whether they are older or younger they play an important role in the development of the other siblings around them and vice versa. How one sibling influences the other has been the talk of family psychologists and therapists, especially in relation to violence and abuse. However, siblings can also serve as a positive influence on their counterparts; maybe even be an inspiration for a groundbreaking theory or two.

It has been noted that those who have experienced positive sibling relationships are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better overall cognition, and social skills (Button et al. 2010). Whereas those who have experienced negative sibling relationships have lower self-esteem and may suffer from depression and anxiety disorders (Button et al. 2010).
