The First World War resulted in a number of changes that would later reveal its significance and impact. The first change the war shaped was the changes the borders of Europe faced. New countries were formed during and after the war such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, and Yugoslavia. Most of these countries were created by ridding Germany and Russia of some of their land. This was due to President Wilson enforcing his idea of self-determination which meant that each nation had the right to rule itself.
