How does it impact Scout? Give evidence. Miss Gates says that “Hitler is the government” and that “persecution comes from people who are prejudiced” (Lee 328, 329). By what she says, Miss Gates becomes very important to the plot of the story. Her words help the reader understand how people feel about prejudice at that time. Summarize the attack in this chapter. (Max. of 5 sentences). Jem and Scout are on their way home from the pageant at school. Jem keeps stopping and listening for brief periods of time because he believes he hears someone behind them. They continue walking and eventually are run down by someone who Scout claims “dragged his feet, as if wearing heavy shoes” and “wore thick cotton pants” (Lee 350).
