Beginning in the eighteenth century, a collection of thirteen fledgling British colonies were undergoing immense changes while struggling with the divisive institution of slavery. Their brutally enforced labor became invaluable in agricultural areas and their population grew, often becoming the majority of many counties in the south. Looking back at this barbaric practice, it would seem inevitable slaves would frequently push back against their bondage through violent protests and uprisings. Author Peter Charles Hoffer’s book, Cry Liberty: The Great Stono River Slave Rebellion of 1739 takes a closer look at such an event. He argues that despite the mainstream view of the rebellion, its origin was not one of premeditated revolt.
History Paper The book, The Fires of Jubilee written by Stephen Oates talks about the issue of slavery throughout the 1800’s. This book discusses the brutal truths of the slaves’ lives, and the how slavery was viewed at the time. The book is mostly based on one slave in particular named Nathaniel Turner.

Some have shown the support for increased opposition while others have shown to not support this opposition. This has caused many disputes about who is in the right. Many slaves were only able to use tools used for work and paired with the element of surprise in many rebellions, the slaves were able to kill their masters and some slaves were even able to escape, however the majority of the slave rebellions ended in the death or capture of the slaves. Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 – November 11, 1831) was an African-American slave who led a slave rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia on August 21, 1831 that resulted in 60 white deaths. He led a group of other slave followers carrying farm implements on a killing spree. As they went from plantation to plantation they gathered horses, guns, freed other slaves along the way, and recruited other blacks that wanted to join their revolt. At the end of their rebellion they were accused of the deaths of fifty white people.[2]
A slave rebellion is an armed uprising by slaves. Slave rebellions have happened in nearly all cultures that practice slavery and are amongst the most feared events for slaveholders. Slave revolts in the late 1700 period were more opinionated in their orientation, and enormous revolts were planned around key political issues, for example the Gabriel Prosser Revolt of 1800. For example, they suffered through many whippings with cow skin if they didn't obey their master, they also got separated from their family mostly the fathers, so, they can be sold to a very mean slave owner. In cases of suicide, “death was seen not only as a liberation from the extreme conditions of slavery, but according to popular African beliefs, as a means of escape permitting the dead to return to their native land”.
