In this present chapter, an attempt is trade to understand the crisis, conflict and the mutual alliance of the gender in the terrain of the nation state.
Silence! The Court is in Session:
‘Silence! The Court is in Session’1 is the English translation by Priya Adarkar of Vijay Tendulkar’s play ‘Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe’. It was performed on the stage in 1967 and published in 1968. It was based on Friedrich Durrenmatt’s story ‘Die Panne’ (Traps). It initially received a lukewarm response. In 1970, it won the prestigious Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya Award for the best play of the year and Sangeet Natak Akademy Award in 1971 and brought both National and International recognition to the playwright.
It theorizes the subdued condition of women-folk in the Post-Independence Indian Scenario. Benare, the school-teacher who is trying to come out as an independent woman falls a victim to the patriarchal ‘mouse-trap’. She only hopes to get a social recognition of her unborn baby. But the members of the so called guardians of moral values create objection to her attempt.
