The theme of my compiled script and final performance is being honest about one’s self. I have included various pieces of prose, each with the same topic of coming out as homosexual, and have juxtaposed each with a short piece of poetry or very short prose. I arranged my piece as so, with the same poem in the beginning and end to frame the piece and allow the audience to ponder the meaning of the poem and if it has changed for them after listening to the performance. I also decided to change the pronoun he in the Silverstein poem the second time around to she to make it more consistent with the piece. He, however, relies much more heavily on literary devices to convey meaning. Silverstein begins the piece using a metaphor in the first line about the girl’s blue skin. One could take this literally, thinking he is writing about a universe where people do have blue skin; however, the double meaning or use of the word as a metaphor makes much more sense in the poem. He continues this metaphor throughout the poem, creating an extended conceit with blue skin representing some secret about one’s true identity. Silverstein uses rhyme, in addition, to create a specific pattern or flow for the piece with two lines ending on he and she and then three lines ending with another sound: blue, through, and knew. Because this selection of prose is similar in style to a motivational speech, it doesn’t follow a plot or a story; however, there is a pattern in the piece that I would like to highlight as I feel that it is similar to the flow of my compiled script. The narrator starts off speaking pretty generally, evenly weighing out the price of being in the closet and coming out, and then as it goes on it is obvious that she weighs more heavily on being truthful which forms the purpose and theme of this piece of prose.
