The statement ‘interesting texts explore important ideas’ proves true throughout history and can be applied to many books. Two examples of this are Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451. Animal farm is a satirical toned, cautionary tale written by George Orwell. The story is an allegory of the events of communism with each character representing a historical figure or group. Fahrenheit 451 is a novel written by Ray Bradbury about a future dystopian world where firemen burn instead of save. The novel was written in 1953 and predicted the uprise of technology competing with the natural world. This essay will discuss universal themes throughout these two books such as rebellion, manipulation and corruption through power while exploring ideas of power …show more content…

Animal Farm uses the theme to start the book and shows how people, or animals in this case, can come together to fight oppression and tyranny. The animals become inspired by a speech given by a respected elder and the pigs take control of a group rebellion to overthrow the farmer. They believe that in this movement they will free themselves from the slavery they endure and become their own masters.

This revisionism is also seen in Animal Farm in the scene where animals come across the amendments made to the seven commandments and are quickly persuaded, by the governments spokesperson ‘Squealer’, that it was a case of ill-memory that lead them to believe the commandments ever looked different. Further, in both books fear is used as a manipulation technique. In Fahrenheit 451 this is shown through the ‘hound’, a mechanical attack dog programmed by the authorities to exterminate any threats to their well-built society of lies. Animal Farm shows the technique through the guard dogs that carry out Napoleon’s wishes and the heartless slaughter of any animal that confesses to being in league with Snowball, the opposition of the government.
