Developing countries, such as Ethiopia, are not yet advanced agriculturally and economically. Developed countries, such as Australia, are economically, agriculturally and technologically advanced. This booklet focuses on the health status of Australian children and children from the developing country Ethiopia. Health indicators and determinants are used to compare the children’s health status from both of these countries. Australia is a country and a continent. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Australia’s major cities are Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and its capital city is Canberra, which is nicknamed the “Bush Capital”. In Australia, the literacy rate rank is #36 out of 215 countries. There is a rather large difference between the two countries. Ethiopia’s education level is quite low, whereas Australia’s is high. The Australian and Ethiopian education systems have similar and different regulations.
In Ethiopia, all children are desperate to join school. With inadequate health care services, many children die before reaching the age of 5. Only a fraction of those who survive attend school if they can afford to go or afford the equipment. Only 55% of Ethiopian children complete primary school. School enrolment starts at the age of 7, but as age in Ethiopia is often assessed by teeth and height, some children start earlier. Starting primary school at a later age could affect their learning development.
Australian schools offer many opportunities and a variety of subjects. Primary school starts around the age of 5. Teachers have assistants to enable them to care and teach disabled children in public and private schools. Some schools provide equipment for the disabled, enhancing their development. This determinant is dictated by the food supply in a household, community or country, and by people having the resources and skills to access and use that food. Poverty is so deep that 15 millions people in Ethiopia have no food security, 6 million live on foreign food aid and millions of families cannot eat 3 meals a day. The amount of Ethiopian children who are undernourished is 29.00%. Whereas in Australia 15% of children are undernourished. These children suffer starvation and malnutrition regularly by not having a healthy diet of 3 appropriate meals a day due to the lack of money and the unavailability of food and clean water. Malnutrition is detrimental to the health and development of children. Malnourished children can experience death, development delay and diseases. They may undergo growth, immune and cognitive implications. The child’s bones can soften, which makes them weak, easier to break and they can stop growing.
